A sea of colourful flags and floats filled the streets of Selsey over the bank holiday weekend for the town's annual carnival event.
It was hailed as the best-ever by organisers and the procession's new route proved to be a hit with visitors.

"Crowds were astronomical, one of the biggest we have ever seen," said Jason Bream, chairman of the Selsey Carnival Association.

"The atmosphere was superb and the change of route for the procession was very successful.

"We want to say a big thank-you to the Rotary Club of Chichester, Sussex Police and to everyone else who gave us such strong support over the weekend."

The popular event was held at the recreation field at School Lane. A village fete kicked-off the carnival on Saturday which saw many cute, fluffy pooches take part in a dog show.

This year a jazz band had been thrust into the limelight to provide live entertainment for the crowds.

On Sunday, August 24, a new 'live mike' event was set up for local bands to show off their talent.

Judges also had to choose the best-looking float from this year's many carnival entrants. The winner was a family dressed as ladybirds.

Even more entrants, including classic cars, joined the floats for the procession along with entertainers on stilts.

The carnival was led down the High Street, into Seal Road and Grafton Road, through Manor Road and then along Church Road.

Crowds then gathered for a spectacular fireworks display in the evening.

Bunn Leisure provided entertainment throughout the event. A car-boot sale was held on Monday to complete the carnival.

"We had lots of positive feedback and I think it was our best-ever," said Selsey Carnival secretary Frances France.

"People were marching with banners and flags and the overall winner was a family dressed as ladybirds.

"They were absolutely overwhelmed and didn't expect to win.

"The general standards of entries were very good. The judges had a very hard task of choosing the winner."

Funds raised from the event are still being tallied up.

The Selsey Carnival Association warmly welcomes new members. To find out more contact chairman Jason Bream on 01243 607065.
