Rottingdean’s new veterinary clinic, The Mewes Vets, has opened, providing local animal lovers with a handy and award-winning service.

Launched by highly-experienced Sussex vet Julia Mewes, the independently-run clinic specialises in a ‘one pet, one vet’ approach – so, apart from exceptional circumstances, your pet sees the same vet with each visit.

The pet-friendly method has been shown to help to ease the stress that can come with a trip to the vet for both owners and their pets, and help the vet better understand their animal patients’ needs.

Rottingdean had a vet clinic for almost five decades but its doors closed in the wake of the pandemic, forcing owners to travel outside the village to find veterinary care.

Aware of the stress that can bring, Julia stepped in to expand her award-winning Haywards Heath clinic, with a brand new service for Rottingdean locals.

Located in Marine Drive, The Mewes Vets in Rottingdean offers a full range of essential veterinary services, with a strong emphasis on preventative care and treatment for elderly animals, plus a compassionate approach for owners.

Julia said: “I think of myself as a GP for pets.

“I am very focused on prevention and offering care to help pets live healthy and long lives.

“I can do all kinds of consultation work, neutering, microchipping, dentistry including extractions and dental radiography.

“If pets need extra support – such as rehydration treatment – I can do that too, and refer them onwards for any specialist care they might need.”

Julia launched The Mewes Vets in Haywards Heath more than 25 years ago and has steered it towards becoming one of the county’s most successful clinics.

In recent months demand for its services has led it taking on two additional vets, while its high-quality care has been recognised with it being named Best Vets in West Sussex 2021 at the UK Best Vet Awards.

That award was particularly special, as it was linked to the many dozens of four- and five-star reviews left by clients delighted by the care their pet received.

A key approach is to talk through treatment plans with clients, to ensure there are options to meet different budgets.

Julia added: “Our one pet, one vet system means our patients - the pets – and our clients typically see the same vet when they come in.

“We think pets are so important they deserve the continuity of seeing the same medical team.

“It’s so much better if a vet knows a patient, knows their temperament, where they don’t like being touched and how they will respond.

“We also get to know their medical story, so their owners don’t have to explain something time and again because we already have had those conversations.

“Plus, if a pet needs treatment for a long-term disease like thyroid or skin problem, it’s so much better to see the same vet at each visit.”

Julia has particular interest in caring for elderly animals and has written two books guiding owners through how to looking after an older cat and a dog with mobility problems.

The clinic is also offering additional services, such as its new puppy socialising sessions. Strictly limited in numbers – so booking is required – the Tuesday evening and Saturday morning sessions gives young pups the chance to learn vital social skills in a controlled environment.

While for nervous pets and those that just extra reassurance, cuddle sessions offer the chance for pets to get to know their vet, so if and when treatment comes around, they feel secure and confident.

The Mewes Vets is now open in Rottingdean, and at its flagship clinic in Haywards Road, Haywards Heath.
