Staff and students at the Bourne Community College in Southbourne are today (August 20) celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results.

Headteacher Simon Liley said he was ‘extremely proud of the hard work and commitment showed by both students and staff’, which had led to another excellent set of exam results this year.

More than half of all students leaving Bourne Community College in 2015 have gained the ‘gold standard’ of five or more A*-C grades including English and maths.

Michael Hobson got nine A* grades, as well as two A grades and one B - which he is asking to be re-marked.

Talented Michael has been awarded a scholarship to attend Christ’s Hospital independent school to study further maths, chemistry, physics, Spanish, drama and maths - hoping to pursing his dreams of becoming an actor.

Mr Liley added: “Over 70 per cent of our pupils gained an A*-C grade in mathematics and over 70 per cent gained an A*-C grade in English Language, English Literature, or both.

“There was a 98 per cent A*-C pass rate for those students studying biology, chemistry or physics.

“We are especially proud that 15 per cent of all grades awarded to our students were either A* or A grades, reflecting our continued push for excellence in all areas.

“Our sincere congratulations go to all of our departing students as they take up their hard earned places at local colleges or start on employment pathways.”

Jack Veness, who lives in Emsworth, was delighted with his five A* grades, three A grades and one B.

The 16-year-old said he was now looking forward to go to Havant Sixth Form College to study maths, chemistry and biology.

“I would like to go down the maths route in the future,” said Jack.

“I was so nervous, but very relieved now.

“My dad’s going to come in in a minute to find out what I got. My friends and I are all really happy.”

The hard work paid off for Issy Gilbert, who also lives in Emsworth.

Issy got two A* grades, five A grades and three B grades.

“I’m now going to do A Levels, possibly at Chichester College,” added Issy, who said the A Level subjects she took were dependent on today’s results.

Issy’s mum Rachel Gilbert said she was ‘really proud’.

“She worked so hard so really deserved to do well.”

Head of Year 11 Helena Jewer said staff were incredibly pleased.

“I am really proud of all the students. They did really well.”

She said student Grace Masih worked especially hard and ‘really deserved’ her five A* grades, four A grades and one B.

Grace said: “I am going to do A Levels in English literature, law, business and Spanish at Havant Sixth Form College. Hopefully I will then go on to do a law degree.”

Grace had her sights set on going to Nottingham University to study English and American law.

“I was quietly confident,” added Grace.
