MEMBERS of Playden’s Elders Club made a journey to St Michael’s Hospice recently to help spread some cheer to their chairman Alan Rider.

The group of Playden friends gathered on Thursday evenings at the Top of the Hill Pub until it closed.

Not to be thwarted, Alan made a bar “conversion” in his garage to allow members to continue meeting.

Member Ted Jackson said: “The group evolved from a chat session to a grumpy old man session and perfected that art. A regular quiz was added.

“Alan is currently receiving welcome and brilliant care at St Michaels Hospice , where the entire group regularly visit. The Elders club is donating £620 to the Hospice with £250 further support to come from Exeter Friendly Society.

“Readers are encouraged to join in the appeal for this incredible local charity which relies on voluntary contributions.”
