HISTORY SOCIETY: Despite competition from the Queen’s birthday celebrations a group of Heathfield History Society members met to hear a talk by Michael Withers on Medieval Musical Instruments. What a lovely evening we experienced. Not only was the talk beautifully illustrated with slides it was also augmented with a display of musical instruments many of which were played during the course of the evening. Mr Withers traced the development of wind instruments form the hollow bones of a swan’s wing to the duct flutes, crumhorns and the wonderfully named Welsh pibgorn. He also traced the development of string instruments from the 3000BC lyre to the rebec, viol and fiddle. Not only did he play a wide variety of the instruments but accompanied by his wife, Dorothy, they sang the music that people at the time of the Renaissance would have known. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and although we couldn’t join in Henry VIII would have had a good singsong!
