Lewes Neville WI: started their April meeting with a toast to the Queen whose 90th birthday it was the following day. Our speaker was David Bramwell whose talk was entitled “The Number 9 Bus to Utopia”. He told us how when his partner left him for “someone younger but more mature” he set himself the life changing task: to become a more sharing, loving person. He embarked on a global adventure to learn to live with others. He visited a number of alternative communities around the world including Findhorn in Scotland, Christiania in Denmark and Damanhur in the Italian Alps which has an underground temple the size of St Pauls Cathedral and a “fully functioning time machine” ! On his return to his home town, Brighton, he became involved in “Zocalo” which is an event when people of a neighbourhood sit outside their house and socialise with their neighbours. It requires minimal organisation and planning and results in people getting to know each other. It was a fascinating talk which he delivered in a lively and humorous style.
The competition was Flower of the Month and was won by Monica Botting.
