Mick Stanley has spent the last three months building his very own vessel with the plan of rowing 100 miles up and down Chichester canal.

Mick, from West Wittering, will row up from Hunston to the Chichester Canal basin and back again every Wednesday and Saturday until the 100 miles are complete.

He is undertaking the nautical endeavor to raise money for St Wilfrids Hospice and to celebrate his 80th birthday this month.

He said: "I really must do something to make some money for charity. It's a local hospice and I think they are an organisation that is worthy and short of money and needs to be helped in anyway that people can.

"I think it will take me up to Christmas," he said, "I'm feeling very good about it and I have already done it there and back — it takes me about three quarters of an hour."

The 'Tintanic' was created over the past three months and was made from two sheets of corrugated iron

So far Mick has raised more than £200.

He said: "I am very grateful and absolutely astounded how much money people have donated already," adding, "they are desperately in need of funds and my hope is that I can raise £1,000 for this very special place that has served and continues to serve us all in the Chichester Area."

He will set off from Hunston for the first leg of his adventure on September 26.
