Tributes paid to James Bond actor Sean Connery who has died aged 90

The actor Sir Sean Connery, best known for his iconic portrayal of James Bond, has died at the age of 90, his family has told the BBC.

The Edinburgh-born star was the first to bring the role of Ian Fleming's book series to the big screen and appeared in seven of the cinematic spy thrillers (every film from Dr. No to You Only Live Twice, plus Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Again).

Sir Sean's acting career spanned seven decades and also included films like The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

'The best Bond'

Many tributes have been paid to Sir Sean in the wake of the news.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said she was "heartbroken" to learn of his passing, adding that "our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons".

Others, including football presenter Gary Lineker, described Sir Sean as "the best Bond".

Shaken and, on this occasion, stirred to hear that Sir Sean Connery has passed away. Had the pleasure of playing golf with him on a couple of occasions. A real character and for me, the best Bond. James Bond should be immortal. RIP
